Trial Reels for musicians

By Roadie Media ·

Ever held back a reel because you weren't sure it was good enough to show your followers? Trial Reels are Instagram's answer. They let you test a reel on people who don't follow you before deciding whether to share it with everyone.

For musicians, that makes them a low-pressure way to try new ideas: a different hook, an unreleased snippet, or a format you've never tried.

How Trial Reels work

Instagram launched Trial Reels in December 2024. As reported at launch by Engadget and 9to5Mac:

  • You turn on the "Trial" toggle when sharing a reel.
  • The reel is shown to people who don't follow you. It doesn't appear on your grid. Followers might still come across it, for example if someone sends it to them.
  • After 24 hours, you can see how it did: views, likes, comments and shares.
  • You can then share it with your followers yourself, or choose to have it shared automatically if it performs well within 72 hours.

Instagram changes features over time, so check the options on your share screen. Trial Reels need a professional account.

Why they suit musicians

  • No pressure on your grid. A test that falls flat doesn't sit on your profile.
  • Honest feedback from new listeners. People who don't know you react to the music, not to loyalty.
  • Growth at a small size. If you have a small audience, reaching non-followers is what grows it.

What to test

  • Hooks. The same song with two different opening seconds: the chorus first, or a striking visual first.
  • Snippets. Which part of an unreleased track gets the strongest reaction before release day.
  • Formats. Talking to camera versus a performance clip versus a lyric video.
  • Covers versus originals. Whether a cover brings in new listeners who then find your own songs.
  • Genres and moods. If you make more than one style, which one travels.

How to run a fair test

  1. Change one thing at a time. Two versions of the same clip with different openings tell you about the opening. Two completely different reels tell you very little.
  2. Run more than one trial. A single result can be luck.
  3. Compare with your usual reel. Look at views and shares against what your normal reels do. Here's how to work out your usual.
  4. Share the winners. When a trial does well, share it with your followers, and make more like it.

The short version

  • Trial Reels show a reel to non-followers first, without it appearing on your grid.
  • After 24 hours you can see how it did, then share it with followers if you like.
  • Use them to test hooks, snippets and formats, one change at a time.
  • Share the winners and make more like them.
